Kelela 12/1 @ Independent

Kelela is a first generation Eithiopian-Ameriacn singer-songwriter who grew up in Maryland, but is now based in LA. Inspired by Little Dragon and Amel Lerrieux, her vocals are quite reminiscent of R&B legends Erika Badu and Janet Jackson.

Kelela actually had no formal vocal training, however she did sing jazz vocals at various local venues and also joined progressive metal band Dizzy Spells. However, her talent was soon recognized by Teengirl Fantasy who featured her vocals on their track EFX. This led to her signing to Fade to Mind, and just last year, her vocals were featured on Kingdom’s additive track Bank Head. Bok Bok also happened to showcase her vocals on his track Melba’s Call earlier this year.

She has opened for Solange, and her Cut 4 Me mix tape was released in last October, featuring her vocals over instrumental tracks produced by fellow labelmates.

Make sure to check out this up and coming songstress out before she explodes on the charts!
