The electronic duo sings about what it’s like to grow up in Baltimore, Maryland. Their newest release is the second full-length record from the group.
Singer Dominic Angelella weaves a tale about a kid who’s trying to make his way in the world, but feels alienated from the people around him. There’s still hope in Baltimore Crush as the narrator navigates through some of life’s toughest terrain using a healthy dose of whimsy.
Angelella works with musical partner Brent Reynolds to create a cozy electronic atmosphere. The two originally collaborated on their first album Paragraph Nights back in January 2013.
Their strong electronic sound wasn’t what made them unusual. They wrote and recorded the entire new Baltimore Crush album without having to be in a room with each other. Angelella would write song ideas on tour as Reynolds deconstructed them, parsing out each musical phrase Angelella invented. After Reynolds had added his touch to the tracks, Angelella would run them by his touring band for them to perfect onstage.
DRGN King’s two musical brains met in 2010 while Angelella was in Hop Along and Reynolds was working with The Roots on hip-hop production tracks. They happened to wind up in a studio together and had an instant musical connection. They have been partners ever since.
This group has proven they don’t let the road get in the way of putting out a quality album. DRGN King has spent most of the past year touring in support of Paragraph Nights. If their first album is any indication, their time on tour might actually prove beneficial for Baltimore Crush.
With a new record coming out and the last tour wrapping up this year, you probably expect DRGN King to take a bit of a breather, but you’d be wrong. The band is picking right up where they left off with a new fall tour in support of Baltimore Crush. Like the album, the tour appears to be a tribute to Angelella’s hometown. They’re making a stop in states and cities all around Baltimore.
