New Images label presents a solid new face in the world of folk/dream pop – meet Itasca. Something of Sharon van Etten’s melancholic part, although more optimistic than Marissa Nadler, all put on a sterling acoustic background. A great debut, in other words.
Born and raised in New York State, Kayla Cohen (real name) moved to Los Angeles in 2012 and started recording at home, finding her inspiration in the change of scene.
As a preview to her upcoming LP ‘Unmoored By The Wind’, set for release on October 14 (pre-order here), Itasca has released a single ‘After Dawn’ via Soundcloud.
The song feels right and fundamental element of the forthcoming record, described in a press release as ‘a spacious set of songs, one you can wander into, flowing seamlessly between wistful interludes a la Bob Desper and fully-fledged verses of powerful, often beguiling imagery’.
Cohen’s fingerpicking, mixed with confident alto and a slight flute creates a full picture of what to expect for in her October release. And that is one decent piece of music, fellas.
