Wilco formed in 1994 from the remains of Uncle Tupelo. Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Ken Coomer and Max Johnston were all members of Uncle Tupelo. Brian Henneman, who had been a guest guitarist for Uncle Tupelo, was added to the line-up. Together they wrote Wilco’s first album A.M.. Reprise Records signed the band after receiving their demo tape in 1994. Jay Bennett joined the band around this time. The band began writing their second album Being There while on an extensive tour supporting their debut. Soon after Johnston left the band. Bob Egan and Jesse Greene helped record the new record which was released in 1996. Around this time Egan was replaced by Leroy Bach. The following year Wilco wrote their third album Summerteeth. Next the band worked on Mermaid Avenue, an album of Woody Guthrie songs. This was followed by Mermaid Avenue Vol. II in 1998. The two Guthrie albums were eventually compiled into Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions.
Some of Wilco began work on a side project called Loose Fur. Glenn Kotche who drummed for the group went on to replace Coomer in Wilco. Bennett also left the band around this time. The band signed to Nonesuch Records after experience trouble with Reprise. Their next record Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was released in 2002. Mikael Jorgensen joined the band that year as well. Bach left the band after finishing work on their next album A Ghost Is Born. Afterwards Pat Sansone and Nels Cline were added to the line up. The new album came out in 2004. It was followed up by Sky Blue Sky in 2007. Wilco’s seventh album Wilco (The Album) came out two years later. There most recent effort The Whole Love was released in 2011.
