The Both have released a new music video for their song the “Volunteers of America.”
Aimee Mann, American rock singer, and Ted Leo, American punk rock singer, came together earlier this year to create The Both. The duo’s first album The Both is out now on SuperEgo Records.
The video for “Volunteers of America” was directed by Daniel Ralston and features musicians such as Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles and London May of Samhain. Mann and Leo not only sing as themselves at the wedding, they also get dressed up and silly later on—playing other roles.
Overall, the video is lively and entertaining. It tells a story of an older couple who renew their vows and the video gives a dizzying view of the outdoor wedding party that follows.
The video itself is entertaining enough to watch and has some funny bits, such as Leo doing the worm.
However, the lyrics really don’t seem to match up at all to what is occurring on screen. The only part that seems to perhaps fit is the chorus. The “Volunteers of America, I’m calling you” lyrics work well with everyone jumping and dancing happily.
The overall upbeat melody of the song goes along with the video images though, such as scenes of the people at the party shown dancing and steadily getting drunk.
Mann has a captivating voice and Leo’s voice blends well with hers when they sing the chorus together. The crowd on the dance floor sings at one point all together which works well.
