LISTEN: Mark Lanegan Band Releases New Song “Flood Of The Ocean”

The Mark Lanegan Band have released a new song called “Floor of the Ocean” from the upcoming album Phantom Radio, set to be released October 20 via Heavenly.

The new album will have ten tracks including “Floor of the Ocean.”

The song’s tune is a haunting one. Guitar, some synth, and a steady beat compose the instrumental part of the song. The American alternative rock musician admitted to taking a more electronic direction with the creating of his music, saying that he used the Funk Box phone app to create the drum part.

Although the music is repetitive, it works well. The focus of the song is on the lyrics and Lanegan’s powerful vocals. Lanegan’s distinctive deep voice fits the melody and the harmonizing of voices adds to the eeriness and puts an emphasis on the vocals.

The lyrics are dark and very captivating. Along with the tune, they call to mind the image of an outlaw on the run: “Midnight, can’t escape the searchlight, hoping they don’t catch me, catch me where I’m riding.”

There is a lost, almost sad feeling captured by the lyrics and the tune.

The humming at the end is particularly haunting and the melody stays stuck in the listener’s mind long after it has faded.

A five track EP called No Bells On Sunday was also recently released as a sort of teaser for the upcoming new album.
