Grimes has released a new sic-fi inferno video for “Go” featuring Montreal producer Blood Diamonds. The song debuted earlier this summer at NYC’s Governor’s Ball and this new music video supports her upcoming performance at Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival in Philadelphia this weekend.
Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, premiered three new songs at the the Governor’s Ball earlier this summer. A few weeks later, Boucher officially released one of the new songs, “Go” as a free download, saying, “It’s our summer jam.” NPR called it “catchy synth pop” while Rolling Stone dubbed her the “electro-pop overlord.” The positive critic and fan responses provide fuel to the fire of rumors of an upcoming album of all this new music, the first since 2012’s highly acclaimed Visions.
Boucher co-directed the video with her brother under the alias of Roco-Prime. The pair traveled around California to shoot the sic-fi homage to Dante’s Inferno. The press release quotes Boucher who explains, “It’s our take on Dante’s Inferno. The circles of hell reflect more contemporary issues though. We shot a bunch at the Salton Sea which is basically an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dead fish because of human carelessness, the bullet hole hallway a la korn freak on a leash, etc etc. If you look closely you can find clues. Haha, but in the usual fashion it is also abstract enough to just be a visual accompaniment to the song.”
The video opens with screenwriter and voice actor David Hayter reading the opening lines of Dante’s Inferno as a record player crackles. Grimes’ high pitched serenade lofts high to a peak and a falls into a hard bass drop as visuals flash between a dry post-apocalyptic desert and a neon fish-eye view into a night club. The colorful visuals of the video play with dimension and perception in a tug-of-war matched in the music’s danceable rhythms and jutting bass drops.
