Brooklyn-grown Seattle transplants The Augustines (previously known as We Are Augustines) are coming to The Independent this fall. Named after the birth month of two of its members, the indie-rock trio formed in 2009 and is currently comprised of Billy McCarthy on guitar, Eric Sanderson on keyboards and bass, and Rob Allen on drums. Their first album Rise Ye Sunken Ships was released completely independently in 2011 and consisted primarily of songs written for McCarthy and Sanderson’s extremely short-lived previous band, Pela. You may notice a lot of angst and despair when listening to the melodies and lyrics featured on this album, as much of the recorded material was influenced by the sudden deaths of both Billy McCarthy’s mother and brother James.
In 2012, the Augustines performed on a number of talk shows, including Last Call with Carson Daly, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Show with David Letterman. In addition to having played at a number of festivals, such as Coachella, Sasquatch (twice), and Austin City Limits, they have toured with the likes of Counting Crows, Band of Skulls, and The Kaiser Chiefs. Their recent self-titled album was released earlier this year via Votiv, and features more uplifting themes than the previous album, but yet is still just as thoughtful and introspective. Both albums are absolutely stunning and worth a listen.
The Augustines have a sound similar to Kaiser Cheifs, Earlimart, and National; popular songs include Chapel Song, Now You Are Free, Walkabout, and Juarez.
And don’t be surprised if you get some closeups of the band- The Augustines have a reputation for abandoning the stage to play audience-level with the crowd! Imagine what an intimate show this will be, especially being at the Indy?!
