Real Friends w Neck Deep, Cruel Hand, Have Mercy @ Webster Hall’s Marlin Room 11/22

Kyle Fasel (bass, lyrics), Dave Knox (guitar), Dan Lambton (vocals), Brian Blake (drums, percussion) and Eric Haines (guitar) make up Real Friends. The pop punk band hails from Tinley Park, Illinois. Real Friends began in 2010 with Fasel and Knox. The two played together, adding Lambton and Haines. Blake was later added on drums.

Following their formation the band released a slew of EPs. In 2011 they released This is Honesty and Cheap Talk and Eager Lies. This was followed by Everyone That Dragged You Here, Acoustic Songs and Three Songs About the Past Year of My Life in 2012. Put Yourself Back Together came out the next year. That year the band signed to Fearless Records. The label released their debut Maybe This Place Is The Same And We’re Just Changing summer of 2014. That year the band also played the Vans Warped Tour.

Like many of the bands in the pop punk/emo genre, Real Friends are known for introspective and personal lyrics. Fasel, the band’s primary lyricist, discussed the prevalence of depression and sleeplessness in their work on the band’s website. He wrote,

It’s about those nights when you’re so overworked and have so much going on that you can’t fall asleep, even if you are physically tired… I in fact do physically have bony knees. But I will surely say that there is a way deeper meaning behind these bony knees. Like I stated before there was some weight loss, which made these knees a little more bony than before. I also found myself physically and mentally down on my knees while going through depression…
