Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Reaches No. 1 on Billboard Charts

The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack is the second to top the Billboard Charts in 2014, following Disney’s Frozen.

The Guardians album, Awesome Mix Vol. 1, sold 109,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 10 (up 83 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan, after a Number 3 debut.

According to Billboard, the album is notable as well for being the first No. 1 soundtrack that does not contain any new material. All of the songs on Awesome Mix Vol. 1 are classic hits from the 1960’s and 70s, like The Runaway’s “Cherry Bomb” and “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5.

The soundtrack plays a pivotal role in the film, as it was given to the main character, Peter, by his late mother.
