Stuart Murdoch Releases Video For “God Help the Girl”

Stuart Murdoch, best known as the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian, has written and directed a musical feature film entitled God Help The Girl. Produced by Barry Mendel, the film stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, and Hannah Murray. Due out September 2, the God Help The Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is preceded by the unveiling of new video for title track “God Help the Girl,” directed by Murdoch and also starring Emily Browning.

The music video came out today on Stereogum and is part one of “The Making of: God Help The Girl,” the first of an ongoing five part series on Pitchfork TV. It features clips from the film as well as new footage of the three rootless summer souls.

The soundtrack album for the movie features three new songs by Murdoch, “Pretty When the Wind Blows,” “I Dumped You First,” and “I’m Not Rich,” all sung by the cast. Dialogue and score can be heard sprinkled throughout the soundtrack which features these three new songs in addition to re-recorded and remixed performances by the cast, many of which were recorded live throughout the making of the movie.

In the press release for the soundtrack, Murdoch explained his desire to tell the story of “a better summer, or at least a summer when something happened. It happened to a boy and a girl and a girl in a city roughly the same size and population of Glasgow. Perhaps the canals were a bit grimier, the high-rise buildings taller, the streets emptier when you needed them to be, and the beat clubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the city was this one.” With the soundtrack due out September 2 in the US, the film itself opens in the UK on August 22 and in New York and LA on September 5.
