Maryland’s Animal Collective formed when Brian Weitz, David Portner, Josh Dibb and Noah Lennox began writing music together during their college years. Their efforts culminated in a record that would eventually become the band’s first release Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished. The bandmates adopted various stage names for their different musical personae during the time; David Portner was Avey Tare, Noah Lennox was Panda Bear, Brian Weitz was Geologist and Josh Dibb was Deakin. The record was finished in 2000. In 2001 they released Danse Manatee under the name Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist. In 2003 Campfire Songs was released and the band began work on what would become Here Comes the Indian shortly thereafter. At the time they were still known as Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist. The band formally adopted the name Animal Collective, naming themselves after their first label Animal and released Here Comes the Indian in 2003 under the new name. In 2004 they released Sung Tongs and Feels. This was followed by Strawberry Jam (2007), Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) and Centipede Hz (2012).
