Her new album’s out August 12, but Tahliah Barnett, the artist FKA twigs, has called “Pendulum” one of her “favorite songs on [the] record.” This is the second single FKA twigs has released from her upcoming album, LP1.
Our first taste of LP1 was Two Weeks, which premiered with a music video back in June. The British singer had her music debut via a self-released album back in December 2012, and has since made it onto Spotify’s Spotlight for 2014 and Billboard’s 14 Artists to Watch in 2014.
“Pendulum” is a haunting song that’s rich in sound. Barnett’s vocals are delicate and airy, complimenting the electronic background that pitter-patters and oscillates softly behind her words. The song opens with the lyrics, “I’m a sweet little lovely gun finding time to make my words better.”
Well, words aside, the song is certainly sweet and lovely, despite the melancholic tone. The opening instrumental beat mimics the little gun image- an almost muffled firecracker sound that bangs along in the periphery. The rest of the instrumentals grow and get deeper as the song progresses, creating a sense of slow build up alongside the rush that follows the fast-moving gunshot elements. It’s a complex song, layered and fragmented in unique ways that take multiple listens to appreciate. All this flowery language aside, “Pendulum” is another solid addition to FKA twig’s library of sultry songs.
Check out the song for yourself below, and look out for the full album next week.
