Nick Oliveri, best known as a bassist with bands such as Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, has released his song “Human Cannonball Explodes” from his new album Leave Me Alone which will be coming out in September.
The song starts out with the sound of a motorcycle gathering speed and then Oliveri’s voice comes suddenly in, screaming more than he is singing. There’s a chaos to the sound of the music that matches lyrics such as: “Spinning around, holding on upside down.”
Lyrics like: “I cross the lanes of the freeway, dead asleep until my head hits the street,” evoke the image of a motorcycle flying dangerously down the highway. There is also the sound of screeching wheels and a crash in the last few moments of the song to further this image of being out of control.
An intense guitar solo captures the spirt of the song well. However, a voice void of emotion speaking at the end does not seem to fit the rest of the song. Oliveri reportedly self-produced and played every instrument on this new album, although guest guitar players make an appearance.
