Fences and Macklemore have teamed up to create “Arrows,” the first single from Fences’ upcoming album Lesser Oceans coming out October 14.
Seattle-based singer/songwriter Fences (Christopher Mansfield) has worked with rapper Macklemore and Ryan Lewis in the past. Lewis produced “Arrows.” While the beat is catchy right from the beginning, “Arrows” is a bit too repetitive at the start. Macklemore brings a certain energy when he comes in. As usual, his rapping carries much emotion, and there is a flow to the way he enunciates words that is unique. Fences’ voice pairs well with Macklemore’s rapping. Towards the end of the song, background singing voices come in while Macklemore is rapping and the contrast of sound is really great. The lyrics are very visual and serve to paint an interesting picture of wanting to escape a harsh reality that you perhaps once longed for.
“He makes mistakes, tells stories to his paintbrush. And when the world finally sees his art he wishes that he never would have made it. Just escape,” Macklemore raps.
Fences will be joining Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival on August 9 to perform “Arrows.” You can listen to the song below.
