The Melvins Announce New Members Paul Leary and JD Pinkus of Butthole Surfers and New Album Hold It In

The Melvins new album, Hold It In, features Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, Butthole Surfers’ guitar player Paul Leary and bass player JD Pinkus as a quartet. And this dynamic band is kicking off a groundbreaking tour in October.

According to Buzz Osborne, this most recent incarnation of the Melvins will definitely stand out of the norm. “Hold It In is a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullsh*t,” said Osborne. “Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can’t believe this actually happened. I’m thrilled.”

It is not unusual for the Melvins’ to creatively arrange metallic masterpieces “outside-of-the-box” but it seems this album will be particularly different from past ones because of the diversity of the group. The musical style of Melvins 1983 with Osborne, Crover, and Dillard on drums was 80s hardcore punk, while the Melvins Lite with Buzz, Dale and Trevor Dunn on bass had a raw classic sound. 2010’s Bride Screams Murder with Big Business’ Jared Warren and Coady Willis, the Melvin’s emphasized the metal around the instruments with hardcore drumming, grinding guitar riffs, and a surge of rock ‘n’ roll. This new collaboration with Leary and Pinkus will be what Osborne calls “a refreshing piece of fiction.”

Even Pinkus seems pretty thrilled about this new setup for the Melvins: “It’s very rare you get a chance to work with three folks from the ‘Break A Wish’ foundation, all at the same time,” said Pinkus. “I believe they’ll remember their experience with me forever (or until they finally all lose their fight with S.I.D.S).”

As a quartet, the Melvins are kicking off a round of U.S. tour dates on Oct. 15 in Sacramento at Assembly. But you can also follow the news about Buzz Osborne’s solo acoustic tour and Dale Crover as the temporary drummer for the OFF! tour. Read the full stories on mxdwn.com.
