The music video for “The Waves Have Come” is an excerpt from a longer film, called Lone, which she wrote with director Mark Pellington. While it begins calmly enough, the serenity does not last, because of the high stakes involved that follow the emotionally charged trajectory and visceral nature of the song.

Wolfe explained that the much of the footage in “The Waves Have Come” was taken from the first time she’d worked with Pellington in a dark green ivy covered room that he had fashioned for the video. She was wearing the dress from the album cover, and was working one-on-one with him, backed by a few lights.

And, she recalled, that this was the first time she truly understood a director’s position on the set of a music video.

“Suddenly he was shouting, guiding me with instructions, emotions, telling me to act as if everything I was singing about – disaster and the loss of life and love – that it was all inside of me and at the same time to act as an observer of these things,”

she said in a press release.

She also explained that Pellington did a lot of the behind-the-scenes production work as well. Their collaboration on “The Waves Have Come” juxtaposes Wolfe’s voice and beauty with clips showing the fragile state of the human condition.
