Here’s why we can’t get enough of Weird Al Yankovic: he’s just too much fun! He has released the last parody of his new album, Mandatory Fun. After an eight-day glance at some pretty funny videos, the song “Mission Statement” ends with a big bang!
Just look at that face. Weird Al is an amazing songster with the ability to make people laugh at ease. His picture says it all–he’s good at what he does and enjoys every bit of it.
The song Mission Statement is a spoof of Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” The rhythm keeps up with lively harmonies, along with a video imitating the sketching technique that corporate’s use to try and lure people into joining their charades. Weird Al expresses this in an e-mail, “I wanted to do a song about all the ridiculous double-speak and meaningless buzzwords that I’ve been hearing in office environments my entire life,” Yankovic says by e-mail. “I just thought it would be ironic to juxtapose that with the song stylings of CSN, whose music pretty much symbolizes the antithesis of corporate America.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, “Yankovic tapped TruScribe to make the video, which took about 10 months to complete, says Eric Oakland, chair and chief innovation officer of the Fitchburg, Wis., company. Yankovic had a “pretty clear” idea of what he wanted, Oakland says, and the agency’s artists worked together to flesh out the singer’s concept. “We hadn’t done anything like that before,” Oakland says. “We had done long-form, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, but to be lyric heavy—music creates a mood that you have to match, too.”
The song is a success. Not only has Yankovic’s fans responded pleasantly to this new parody but also Graham Nash. Yankovic was actually asked by Graham Nash, who is familiar with Weird Al’s twist to celebrity songs, if he would ever make a ‘Weird Al’ version of “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” In a recent Reddit AMA, Yankovic wrote, “I whipped out my iPhoneand played ‘Mission Statement’ for him. Instant request! (He loved it, BTW.)”
Although this is the last comedic video he will release from the album Mandatory Fun, we will all remember the fun: “Word Crimes,” “Tacky,” “Foil,” “Lame Claim To Fame,” “First World Problems,” “Sports Song,” and “Fancy.” You can visit posts about his previous videos by clicking on the song titles. Weird Al’s new album “Mandatory Fun” is also available on RCA.
