With only one more video left of his #8videos8days campaign left, “Weird Al” Yankovic released his seventh video, and third original song off the new album Mandatory Fun today entitled “Lame Claim To Fame”.
The newest video is a creative stop motion cross between Peter Gabriel’s legendary “Sledgehammer” and South Park’s construction paper animation.
Taking place inside of a hillbilly looking character’s scrapbook, Al brags of how he knows or has met numerous stars, sometimes through six degrees of separation, including yes you guessed it, Kevin Bacon. Heavy on the cowbell, he boasts that he, “bought a second hand toaster, from a guy who says he knows Brad Pitt” and “used the same napkin dispenser as Steve Carell at a Taco Bell.”
“Weird Al” in his usual quirky story telling goes on to claim that he once sat in the bathroom stall next to Jonah Hill and that he has the same birthday as Kim Kardashian.
Al started off the week with four parodies of popular songs by Pharell Williams, Lorde, Robin Thicke and Iggy Azalea, and rounding off the last three days with whimsical originals including “Sports Song”, “First World Problems”, and now his latest, “Lame Claim To Fame”.
Rejuvenating a career spanning over 30 years including his first video parody in 1984 of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” entitled “Eat It” to his 2006 version of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin Dirty” fittingly named “White & Nerdy”. “Eat It”, in an unprecedented feat for the comedy music genre, made it to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, while 22 years later, “White & Nerdy” made it all the way to number 9.
Al’s last studio album, Alpocalypse featured a parody of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”, called “Perform This Way”, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Short From Music Video in 2011.
