Weird Al Yankovic has veered off from poking fun at pop songs in his latest video parody “Sports Song.” Instead, he targets the intensity of sports fans and their schools’ fight songs. Known for his humorous imitations of popular culture, Yankovic has not disappointed with his video parodies that have been released daily this week in order to promote his new album Mandatory Fun.
His hilarious spoofs of pop songs that have been circulating this week include: “Tacky”, which is take on Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy,” a parody of “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea where Yankovic is “handy”, a comedic rendition of “Royals,” where he sings about “Foil” to the beat of Lorde’s popular song, and “Word Crimes” where he gives a grammar lesson to the tune of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”
In the “Sports Song” video, Yankovic stomps across a football field outfitted in a band uniform, with a full marching band and color guard behind him. The marching band plays a melody that is typical of school fight songs: up-beat, cheery, and repetitive.
The video periodically cuts to the bleachers, where fans decked out in sportswear aggressively chant the phrase: “We’re great and you suck.”
This repeated line and the other lyrics reflect what fans are often really thinking and very much want to sing aloud when they are cheering on their team with their school’s fight song.
“Our players are fast and strong and brave and your guys not so much,” Yankovic sings, after which a football player effortlessly knocks over a player of the opposing team.
The rest of the lyrics continue to explain how the other team is inferior in every way. Towards the end of the song, Yankovic is particularly funny when he sings: “Okay, full disclosure, we’re not that great, but nevertheless, you suck.”
Yankovic’s spoof on the popular fight song shows how sports fans often get overly dedicated to their team, repeatedly asserting how great their team is (even if they really aren’t). It successfully makes fun of the often highly competitive world of sports.
