Scott Walker and Sunn O))) Announce New Album Soused for September 2014 Release

Earlier in July, 4AD revealed that Scott Walker would be collaborating with drone metal legends Sunn O))). Well, Walker & Sunn O))) are set to release an album, called Soused, in Septermber 2014.

The roots of this collaboration go back to 2009, when Sunn O))) asked Scott Walker if he would appear on their album, Monoliths & Dimensions. At that time, neither party knew what the next step would be. However, four years later, Walker approached the group with an even more enticing idea – collaborating on a project that would later become Soused, as he was writing songs with their sound in mind, according to a recent press release.

The core duo of Sunn O))), Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, have been at the forefront and heart of the Los Angeles underground and experimental metal scene. Over the years since their 1998 beginning, they’ve expanded their sound to encompass avant garde and jazz dynamics, while retaining dark themes within their music. On this recording, they appear alongside extended Sunn O))) member Tos Nieuwenhuizen.

With a career spanning five decades, Scott Walker remains an important figure within the music scene. After experiencing mega-stardom as a part of The Walker Brothers, he went on to carve out a solo career with four self titled LPs that offered a vignette of life in the 1960s. Then, Walker recorded a collection of more challenging albums: Climate Of Hunter (1984), Tilt (1996), The Drift (2006) and Bish Bosch (2013). They are complex, uncanny, and disturbingly counter intuitive. But, if you’re familiar with his albums in the late 1960’s – notably, The Plague and It’s Raining Today – then, it becomes clear that bringing in the uncanny is his songwriting knack.

Soused was recorded in London, earlier this year. It is produced by Scott Walker and Peter Walsh with the assistance of musical director Mark Warman. According to a press release, “Soused is a 5 track, 50-minute collaborative record that cements the status of both act’s wide-reaching and otherworldly renown.”

The album will be available in the U.K. and Europe on September 22, and out in the U.S. on September 23 as a cd, lp, and digital download.
