No Doubt About Kitten

Kitten is no rookie to releasing music; the bulk of their YouTube page is comprised of music videos and performances posted at least two years ago. As a group they’ve toured with the likes of No Doubt, Charli XCX and now Paramore. Their self-titled album is their first full-length release on Elektra Records, and it’s worth a listen.

The group covers a lot of ground in just thirteen tracks: breathy vocals, distorted guitars, pop/dance beats and aforementioned ’80s vibes. These songs may induct a few double-takes, as they are so reminiscent of a variety of other artists. Singer Chloe Chaidez’s vocals cover a wide range of genres and take on many different characteristics that set the group apart from their peers (Not to mention, she’s not even 20 years old). The album reminds you of those various artists and songs, but you can still tell it’s Kitten.

Tracks like “Doubt” sound like they are plucked directly from Miami Vice, but translate easily to now. It’s a song from both the male and female perspectives: waiting for one to reciprocate and figure out what the other wants. “I’ve been waiting for you / Night and day do you feel loved / I’ve been patient / But you should figure it out.”

The variety of styles on the album is worth noting. “Sex Drive” has a funky swagger to it, and rightly so; it can be described as nothing short of a sexy bassline with begging vocals. “G#” opens with a distorted guitar and floats the listener the rest of the way in a soothing state of distortion. “Apples and Cigarettes” is the lone acoustic song— guitar, light keyboards and vocals with light reverb. If you wondered if Chaidez could actually sing without the effects on the other tracks, just skip straight to this track. She can.

If you’ve heard of Kitten before, you’ll recognize some of the songs on the album— half are from the band’s previous EPs. The entire thing is fun, has an electronic vibe and an updated ’80s feel to it. The group definitely found a great way to drop a full-length album.
