WATCH: Trampled by Turtles Release New Video for “Wild Animals”

The video for the title track off Trampled by Turtles’ eagerly awaited new album Wild Animals will premiere at AV Club. The new album is due out on July 15th on the label Thirty Tigers. “Wild Animals is classic Trampled by Turtles at it’s core,” Ryan Young, the band’s fiddler and harmony singer, said in a press release.

The video stars Har Mar Superstar and was directed by Phil Harder. The track was was produced by Alan Sparhawk, and had been recorded at the legendary Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, MN. And, Young said the video is unlike anything they’ve done before. Also, Wild Animals will be up for audience interpretation and take on different meanings for each listener.

In a press release, Sparhawk said that the band is taking instruments that have been around for generations, but diving into the songs and the recording process with “post-Punk energy and selflessness.” Everyone in the band and those involved at various stages along the recording process had a part in the arranging of the songs, because their goal is to create an arrangement that best serves the song. “The message is not about individuals—it’s about what can be done when people get together, apply their heart and soul, and make a little room for each other,” Sparhawk added.

The video for “Wild Animals” follows taxi cab trip in New York City, and uses visual elements such as rack focus to tell the story of a woman heading home from a night out and that of the man driving her home. The city and the rainy weather feature prominently to establish a sense of place and a feeling of melancholy. Musically, the song “Wild Animals” features haunting harmonies laid over a gentle bluegrass influenced track.
