Brody Dalle has released a new video for the song “Don’t Mess With Me”. The video follows suit with the name, as Dalle uses the video to reflect on the hardships she has been through in life.
“Don’t Mess With Me” is the third single from Dalle’s solo debut, Diploid Love. The video’s director, Richard Farmer, explains that he and Dalle wanted to use the video as representation of how strong she is. “She wanted to get messy, and that started the ball rolling,” Farmer says. “She had some early interpretations of the song when she was writing it, but we know with any great song, it can have many meanings to different people. We wanted to honor that and have symbols — objects that would not only be cool to see, but rise to the metaphorical soul of the lyrics.”
The song and video are symbolic of personal obstacles that Dalle had to overcome. Dalle has survived abuse, she was addicted to meth, the break-up of her band, the Distillers, and a divorce to from her Rancid singer Tim Armstrong. However, despite facing this dark times, Dalle has still managed to overcome this situations and she is now happy, healthy, and stronger than ever. Today, she is happily married Josh Homme and they have two children together.
Farmer uses Dalle’s life as inspiration to conclude what he envisioned for this video. “I wanted to see her stand there and take on the world head on,” he explains. “She’s a strong person, and if you have ever seen her live, she can’t be knocked down — she owns it up there. Statuesque, badass, and beautiful, like a rock goddess should. I mean, come on, Brody covered in blood: visual heaven.”
In addition to the release of her first solo album, Dalle also recently teamed up with Garbage to release a video for “Girl Talk”. More information about Brody Dalle can be found here. The new video for “Don’t mess with me” can be viewed below.
