Simian Mobile Disco Announce New Album Whorl

They may not be simian, and they’re not exactly disco, but Simian Mobile Disco are undeniably mobile. Upcoming album Whorl is a product of one of the strangest, most ambitious recording plans we’ve ever heard of.

Simian Mobile Disco is James Ford and Jas Shaw of the band Simian. Both are former members of early 2000’s electronic group Simian. Simian folded, but Ford and Shaw decided to carry on, combining to form their new double-act. The two have quickly earned a reputation as razor-sharp remixers and masterful producers of analogue electronic music.

Whorl then, is an unusual album from an unusual band. The duo decided to dispense with all the conveniences of a modern production studio, instead opting to head for the Southern California desert with minimal recording equipment (and hopefully a few bottles of water). SMD claims that their limited kits helped inspire them musically, forcing them to make a lot from a little. Their desert jaunt concluded with a live Pioneertown concert, which allowed fans a glimpse into their unusual musical process.
