Black Lips w/ Nightbirds @ House of Vans

Vocalist Cole Alexander, bassist Jared Swilley, drummer Joe Bradley and guitarist Ian Saint Pé Brown make up Georgia’s indie band Black Lips. Known for their stage antics, which include vomiting, dropping trou and lighting off fireworks, the band has earned a reputation for putting on a wild performance. In recent years the theatrics have died down, but they are still hallmarks of a Black Lips show. In an interview with The Red & Black, Swilley noted that “the audience fuels (them)…These last tours have been the crazier ones.” The band is also known for traveling where few rock bands have ventured before. In 2009, they played India, a show which almost got the band arrested, and in 2012 headlined shows in Jordan, Cyprus, Egypt, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and Lebanon.

Meanwhile the band has been steadily releasing music. Their debut full-length Black Lips! came out back in 2003 on Bomp! Records. Their second album We Did Not Know the Forest Spirit Made the Flowers Grow was released a year later on the same label. The band switched to Vice Records and released Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo in 2007. That year Black Lips also played the South by Southwest festival, gaining attention from The New York Times. In 2007 the band also released Good Bad Not Evil off of Vice Records. They released their fifth album 200 Million Thousand in 2009 and Arabia Mountain later that same year. Most recently the band has released Underneath the Rainbow, which can be purchased now on vinyl.

The show is part of Vans House Parties, a free concert series hosted by FYF. Attendees required to RSVP for the concert on the Van’s website. Two tickets can be reserved per person. Attendance is first come first serve based on venue capacity, RSVP’ing DOES NOT guarantee entry.
