August 26th brings about the return of The Bug. The legendary UK producer, who’s given name is Kevin Martin, is set to unleash his much anticipated follow-up to his 2008 release, London Zoo. The new album is called Angels & Devils and is being released on Ninja Tune.
As the title suggests, the record explores the duality between light and dark, good and evil, and life and death. And, with various ‘think tanks’ reporting that society’s collapse is near, Martin’s dystopian London from 2008’s London Zoo might’ve been a bit more accurate than we thought. And if we are in fact declining rapidly to chaos, then [according to a press release on the album], “there’s no better time to focus that sonic assault from earthly domains and blast it to the netherworlds above and below.”
Unlike London Zoo, Angels & Devils takes on a world-view, instead of a city-specific view. In these days of YouTube life-hacks and quick fixes, and short one song memory spans, its wonderful to see Martin creating a narrative that celebrates all sides of life. This is a feast for the ears that features collaborations by: Manga, Death Grips, Flowdan, Liz Harris of Grouper, Warrior Queen, and Miss Red, among others.
Finally, the concept would not be complete without Simon Fowler’s stunning hand-drawn illustration.
