The 2014 Honda Civic Tour marking its 13th year with an expansion: three different tours, each featuring a distinct style of music. Everything kicks off this August with Los Angeles based indie-band, Grouplove co-headlining the first leg with Portugal. The Man.
Formed in 2009, Grouplove garnered a loyal international fan base following performances at: Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and the Reading & Leeds Festivals. And that was before they released their first full-length album, Never Trust a Happy Song (Atlantic Records, 2011).
The album featured the single, “Colours,” which was described as “one of the most infectious songs you’re bound to hear,” by SPIN. It went on to climb to the top 15 on the Alternative radio charts, and remains a fan favorite. Their next single “Tongue Tied” went #1 and was later certified platinum. Fall 2013 saw the release of Spreading Rumours, which was described by National Public Radio as being an album that is “ludicrously easy to love.” “Ways To Go” – the first single off of the album – went to #2 on the Alternative radio charts, and was supported by a pair of sold out tours that included stops at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the Coachella Music and Arts Festival.
Portugal. The Man hails from Wasilla, AK, but is based in Portland, OR. 2013 saw the release of their album Evil Friends that was produced by Danger Mouse. To date, the band has headlined shows and international festivals including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Lollapalooza. Most recently, the band partnered with the Smithsonian Institute to raise awareness of the endangered Sumatran Tiger. The band turned to social media to get the word out. They released “Sumatran Tiger”, a new song on custom polycarbonate records. The catch was there were only 400 copies in existence, and the album would degrade after time. “Sumatran Tiger” was given to 400 influential participants who were asked to “breed” the song using #EndangeredSong.
Brooklyn-based, American Authors will headline the second leg of the Honda Civic Tour. The band members came from all around the United States, and bring their own regional influences and personal life experiences to the group’s song-writing process. And the result is highly contagious optimism contained in four-part alt-rock harmonies.
3BallMTY (pronounced: Tribal Monterrey),cultural phenomenon and award-winning Latin electronic music group from Monterrey, Mexico, will headline the third leg of the Honda Civic tour this November.
They combine cumbia, tropical, and pre-Hispanic musical textures with electronic mixes. And, in doing so, the group has broken generational, cultural, and language barriers.
Their first album, Inténtalo, went gold in Mexico and platinum in the U.S. and Central America. Then, they were selected by iTunes as 2012’s “Best Latin Breakthrough Album”, named Best New Artist on the Latin Grammy Awards, and have accumulated numerous awards and accolades. Now, they are poised for mainstream international success.
