In an interview with “Une Dose 2 Metal”, Vinnie Paul reminisced about the successful 1994 Pantera album Far Beyond Driven. Paul stated that despite the success of the album, Pantera would never reunite due to the death of guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell.
In 2004, Dimebag was shot and killed while performing with Damageplan in Columbus, Ohio. Following the shooting, Paul, who is Dimebag’s brother, indirectly blamed former Pantera singer Anselmo for the death. According to blabbermouth.net Paul began “suggesting that some remarks the vocalist had made about Dimebag in print just weeks earlier might have incited Dimebag’s killer.”
Some have suggested that Pantera reunite with Zakk Wylde filling in for Dimebag on guitar. In the interview, Paul responded saying, “People always ask me, ‘Is there gonna be a reunion?’ ‘Are you gonna do something with Zakk Wylde?’ or whatever. And it’s just, like, no ‘Dimebag’ Darrell, no Pantera. It just doesn’t fly; it’s not gonna work”
In a separate interview with Revolver magazine, Paul made similar conclusions stating, “”If you had an ex-wife, and it was a pretty bitter split, you might not ever want to talk to her again. Who cares if everybody in the family and your friends want you to say hello again? It’s your choice whether you want to do it or not. And I think a lot of people are selfish. They say, ‘Oh, he oughtta just kiss and make up with Phil and everything will be cool. And then they can go get Zakk Wylde and everything’s gonna be great.’ No, everything’s not gonna be great.”
