The Red Hot Chili Peppers recently hit the stage of The Tonight Show alongside The Roots. The groups collaborated to play Funkadelic’s “Standing on the Verge of Getting It On” as well as “Give It Away.”
The band performed on The Tonight Show in support of drummer Chad Smith, who appeared with Will Ferrell in double interview with Jimmy Fallon, during which the drummer and actor pretended to be each other while making fun of the “controversy” surrounding their similar appearances.
The so-called rivalry emerged when Will Ferrell, taking advantage of the similarity, joked on Reddit that he and Chad Smith were actually the same person, saying that the “truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.” Following an interesting Instagram exchange between the two celebrities, drumoff was decided as the only way to settle things, with Ferrel agreeing to the event on the condition that $300,000 be raised in advance for charities Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock. Smith was drumming for charity earlier this month, too, as one of many musicians taking part in the 10th Anniversary MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert.
After the drumoff, the rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers hit the stage with The Roots to perform their own “Give It Away” and Funkadelic’s “Standing On the Verge of Getting It On.” If you missed the episode, check out videos of the performances below.
