Godflesh, the groundbreaking industrial metal band that split in 2002, is now releasing music for the first time in 13 years. Their EP Decline and Fall, a teaser for an upcoming full-length, is slated for release in June 2014.
Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green formed Godflesh in Birmingham, England in 1988, when they decided to leave their current bands (Napalm Death and Fall of Because, respectively) and work together on a project that would combine hardcore music with lo-fi and electronic-style production. The result was a band that experimented with a variety of sounds and ultimately came to define at least one part of the “industrial-metal” label.
In 2001, Green left the band. Shortly afterwards, Broadrick experienced nervous breakdown that led to the cancellation of a U.S. tour. In 2002, Broadrick formally dissolved Godflesh and formed Jesu, the shoegaze-influenced post-metal act for which he’s best known.
In 2009, the original Godflesh duo reunited for a number of festival appearances. Although the pair initially made no promises about future music or performances from Godflesh, they toured the U.S. just this April, and have evidently been working together on new tracks for some time. On Decline and Fall, fans will get a sampling of the fruits of Godflesh’s labors, the rest of which will be heard on the highly anticipated LP, set for release in the fall.
