Alex Turner, frontman of Arctic Monkeys, has said that he doesn’t believe the decision for Metallica to headline Glastonbury Festival adds up.
Though Turner says he is fan of Metallica, he seems worried that they are not a right fit as a Pyramid Stage headliner for the Glastonbury Festival. The prominent role that Arctic Monkeys played in Metallica’s Orion Music and More Festival in 2012 points toward Turner being truthful about his fandom, but makes his latest comments more confusing. After saying that “it doesn’t add up,” the lead vocalist continued his opinionated statement: “I know we’d buzz off it, but fundamentally could you have Metallica in the hippy nucleus?”
Michael Eavis, an organizer for Glastonbury, has been questioned for headline choices in the past, including putting Jay-Z in a headlining slot in 2008. That year Noel Gallagher of Oasis said, “Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.” Later on, the audience responded well to the hip-hop mogul and proved Gallagher wrong.
Aside from Metallica, 2014 Glastonbury headliners include Lily Allen, Arcade Fire, Jack White, Kasabian and M.I.A.
