Kitty Releases New EP “impatiens”

Just last week, indie-rapper Kitty (formerly Kitty Pryde) gave us new track — glitchy, dream-pop influenced “☆:*・°☆:* emob0unce °☆.*・°☆” — on Soundcloud. Now, she’s back again with a surprise five-track EP titled impatiens, available for download, name-your-own-price, on Bandcamp.

Once Kitty’s first music video “Okay Cupid” went somewhat viral in 2012, she was no just longer teenager with a gift for smart rhymes and a Youtube account — she was a talking point. For a few months, the then-19-year-old found herself suddenly central to conversations about the transforming relationships between music, age, and the Internet.

After “Okay Cupid,” Kitty became a prolific rapper. In the last two years, she’s collaborated with Riff Raff, released two EPs, toured with Danny Brown, and produced several surreal, homegrown music videos. Everything before impatiens, however, sounded like a predictable follow-up to “Okay Cupid”: minimalist production, biting lyrics about suburbia, fuzzy vocals to remind us that recording really did take place in a bedroom.

Now, Kitty is 21, and on impatiens, she shows us how she’s grown. Her production is more intentional and her voice is sharper. She combines her penchant for exaggeratedly glittery visuals (in high school, she worked the cash register at Claire’s) with her raw rap style. The result? The seamless fusion of bubble gum pop hooks and hip-hop beats. In light of Kitty’s career trajectory, this combination seems logical: impatiens really does sound like the musical equivalent of hanging out at Claire’s with Riff Raff.

impatiens is available now on Bandcamp. Stream the full EP on souncloud:
