Aphex Twin’s unreleased 1994 Album, Caustic Window makes $67,424 on a Kickstarter. The original goal of the project was to make $9,300 and the actual generated profits exceeded this number by 9 times.
The Kickstarter initiative was thought up by Rephlex Records and We Are the Music Makers (WATMM). The initial idea came about after a mysterious seller listed the album on the music Discogs site for $13,500. The Caustic Window album was recorded, but never released and supposed there are a few tes copies in existence. Given the rarity of the album, the idea behind this project was to gather enough individuals to come together to purchase the rights for the album. With the purchased rights from enough users, a digital download of the LP would be made available for sale for 16 dollars.
Given the initial goal for the Kickstarter, roughly 500 people were expected to own Caustic Window. However, as a result of the unbelievable success of the Kickstarter, 4,115 people now have access to the Caustic Window album. Now that the Kickstarter project is complete, the original LP will be auctioned on eBay. According to reports, the proceeds for the sale will be split evenly between Rephlex/Aphex Twin, those who paid into the Kickstarter, and a charity. We Are the Music Makers users will be able to decide what charity the proceeds should be donated to.
Joyrex, the WATMM site administrator seemed to feel that the auction was a goo idea. He said, “Apparently all agree that it’s a good chance to give the hardcore fans a unique chance to own something that will never see the light of day otherwise”.
