Electronic legends Cabaret Voltaire will release their new compilation #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) on July 1st, 2014.
#7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) brings together two phases of electronic legends Cabaret Voltaire (1978-81 and 1983-85) for the first time ever. In the first of these, the lineup consisted of Richard Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson, who were recording their groundbreaking work at Western Works Studio, Sheffield, and releasing records on Rough Trade. The later phase, 1983-1985 follows Cabaret Voltaire as Watson left the group and Kirk and Mallinder released tracks on Some Bizzare Label through Virgin Records. Now the sole member, Kirk still records at Western Works and is the curator for this 18 track compilation. When choosing the tracks for #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985) he explains, “I decided to gather the more concise elements of the work… Hence the choice of 7” singles, edits and shorter album tracks, a kind of sound bite take on CV.”
Formed back in 1973, Cabaret Voltaire was hugely important to the UK (and global) electronic movement of the late 70s. Their groundbreaking mix of dub, techno, and house has placed them alongside acts like Human League, Throbbing Grislt, Fad Gadget and The Normal, and ensured their legacy in electronica for the last 40 odd years. Fans can expect classic tracks on this compilation such as “Nag Nag Nag”, “Sensoria”, and “Landslide, I Want You”, alongside 7″ releases and radio edits. Furthermore, Kirk plans both to perform live and record more projects in the coming year, so keep your eyes peeled!
