Shabazz Palaces announced their return with the release of their sophomore album, Lese Majesty. The album release date is July 29th via Sub Pop.
Last weekend, Shabazz Palaces premiered the album at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center Laser Dome. The title of the album is a play on “Lese-majeste” which is the French term for “injured majesty. As a result, the album is said to feature commentary. In Shabazz Palaces’ first album, Black Up emphasized concepts of gender, race and identity.
In a review of the album, The Stranger called it “The future of hiphop” adding, “there was no need for drugs, or even the dazzling light show, since the music’s fathoms-deep dubscapes and strategically predatory beats equaled the angular and smoky psychedelic visuals—each track already dazzled by a universe of deep-space stars, clouds of galactic gases, and the bright trails of wandering balls of ice.”
Shabaaz Palaces is a hip-hop duo consisting of Ishmael Butler (Palaceer Lazaro) and Tendai “Baba” Maraire. The group formed in 2009 and released two anonymous EPs, Eagles Soar, Oil Flows, and The Seven New. In 2011 the group singed wit Sub Pop and released their debut album, Black Up. In March, the duo collaborated together on riZe vadZimu riZe on the debut album from Maraire’s Chimurenga Renaissance side project. The duo has a concert scheduled for June 20 through 21 in London, UK.
