LISTEN: Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and Thurston Moore Cover Gun Club’s “Nobody’s City”

So Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, and Thurston Moore all walk into a recording studio. No joke, and the punchline’s one hell of a song. Those three powerhouses all came together to work on the third chapter of the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project.

The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project is, fittingly enough, a series of releases meant to bring to life some of the work left behind by the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce, frontman of seminal punk blues outfit The Gun Club. Pierce passed in 1996 after suffering a brain aneurysm, but friends and admirers of the late musician have carried on with his work. Other artists have worked with found blueprints of songs, and have been hard at work recording, compiling, and releasing them. Axels & Sockets is the third album of the sessions, and figures to be the penultimate one as well.

It couldn’t kick off any harder than it does. “Nobody’s City” is the lead song, and has some serious firepower, largely thanks to the men playing it. Iggy Pop needs no introduction, and you’ve probably heard of Nick Cave. Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore has also been busy of late, recently working with metal supergroup Twilight on their final album. They mix wonderfully on “Nobody’s City”, as Pop quavers, Cave growls, and Moore shreds. Give ’em a listen:
