Pharrell Says Cee Lo Green Originally Recorded “Happy”

The iconic producer/singer has revealed the song was first recorded by Crazy’s singer Cee Lo Green but that “the powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him”.

The story was unveiled in a recent radio interview with Howard Stern, regarding the song Pharrell said that Cee Lo “wanted to do it… and he did do it” he added

He burns my version! But. . . how do I say this diplomatically? The powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him. Some folks on his team just felt that the priority should be on (Cee Lo’s) album at the time, so they elected not to do that song.

However it is, ‘Happy’ would go down in history as one of the most memorable songs of the past years; the success it achieved as ‘Despicable Me 2’ soundtrack (watch Pharrell’s performance of ‘Happy’ at the 2014 Oscar ceremony) can only be topped with the song achieving the highest rankings in every relevant countdown from 2013, including mxdwn’s Top 40 songs of 2013.
