Folkster Sharon Van Etten has just unveiled her second single from her upcoming fourth album, Are We There.

“Every Time the Sun Comes Up” is a laid-back, pining track that features a slower tempo, and softer, reverby guitar from the Brooklynite. Perhaps more cheerful sonically than some of her other work, the lyrics convey a beautiful, longing sentiment mixed with the her more nitty-gritty descriptions like “I washed your dishes, but I shit in your bathroom”. The chorus lifts us up with her voice layered with harmonies repeating, “Every time the sun comes up, I’m in trouble”, as the drum track thuds on hypnotically. If this track were a time of year, it would be that bittersweet period in Autumn where you realize everything around you is dying but it’s just too gorgeous to pass up.
Van Etten is right in the thick of it these days, with just a month left until her new album drops in May on Jagjaguwar. She already released her first single, the distorted and dreamy “Taking Chances”, last month, and will kick off summer tour after the album release. We can’t wait to see the rest of the album when it drops! Stay tuned.
