The Troubadour was packed like a can of sardines. Things started off with a classic DJ set– old school Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and newer-school Kendrick Lamar. Chuck Inglish was poetic but brought serious hip-hop energy; he knows what to say and how to say it smooth. His style is genuine and reminiscent of early Beastie Boys, which was very effective for keeping the audience excited and entertained. He requested early on to use “that disco ball with some lights shining on it,” making everyone downstairs cheer and wave their hands up while the crowded balcony was filled with listeners dancing on the bleachers.
The screams escalated when Asher Roth took to the stage, singing “Dude” with a leisurely but locked down delivery. Backed with a full band for a more intimate sound, the whole show was filled with a sweet sense of comradery, much like a giant house party. Every song was a hit, especially “In the Kitchen” and “Party at the Disco,” featuring the bold and silky voiced Tori Kelly. The sing along anthem “La Di Da” got the the crowd amped up. So amped, in fact, that a mature fan, Carol, found herself dancing on stage with Asher. Roth was happy to inform her that she was welcome up there, but that she would have to crowd surf off stage. After a brief bit of confusion that turned to hesitation, Carol succumbed to the sound of everyone encouragingly shouting her name and made the trust fall safely into the arms of the crowd.
A few more songs were offered up and all were eagerly devoured. The set was finished with “Tangerine Girl.” Roth barely made it off stage before the screams and shouts for “one more song” got extreme. The show wrapped up with a quick encore of “Grind” and the epic mega hit everyone knows and adores, “I Love College.” It was certainly a party no one wanted to leave, and a lucky few concert goers had VIP tickets to hang out with Rith and crew after the show. I’m sure that was one crazy after party… I hope they taped it.
