Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) Forms New Band Freeman, Releases Song and Announces Self-Titled Album

Aaron Freeman’s (of Gene Ween) new band, Freeman, had their first track leaked to the interweb world today- and through Jack Black, no less!

Aaron Freeman, known as founder of experimental alt-rock group Gene Ween, has announced his new project under the name FREEMAN with a new song. The track, titled “(For a While) I couldn’t play my Guitar Like a Man” was leaked through Jack Black’s facebook earlier, as he wrote “More genius from the master!”. After the split of Gene Ween in 2012, Freeman released a set of Rod McKuen covers on an EP called Marvelous Clouds. Since, he has announced plans to release the debut for hisFREEMAN July 22nd on Partisan Records.

Freeman talks at length of the role of intoxication, addiction, and substance abuse as central to his work. To those skeptical about his newfound sobriety, claims that he “wrote the songs I wrote in Ween despite all the drugs and alcohol I was doing, not because.” Since, Freeman has had to wrestle head on with many of his demons, and according to the musician, would “probably be dead” had he not left Ween. FREEMAN is Aaron Freeman on main guitar and vocals, joined by Chris Boerner, Brad Cook and Joe Young, Dave Godowsky and Kyle Keegan, and the twelve track debut promises “a collection of gorgeous, subtly offbeat songs-in other words, a continuation of the thread that runs through the entire Ween catalog.” Check out the leaked track!
