On May 5, Dave Grohl will be hosting a birthday celebration for Big Tony of Trouble Funk. The festivities will commence at The 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.
Performances for the night include Trouble Funk, The Don’t Need It’s ( featuring Darryl Jenifer, Dr. Know, Pete Stahl, and Dave Grohl), and an unannounced special guest.
Big Tony Fisher is best known for his role as band leader, bassist, and vocalist in Trouble Funk. According to the Trouble Funk website, the band “is synonymous with the emergence of the non-stop, percussion driven, best seen live, experience the party, audience participatory call and response, grassroots, homegrown music called Go-Go”. The band was created in Washington D.C., which may explain why the birthday celebration will be held in the same location.
Party host, Grohl, has made his career playing with major bands Nirvana, Scream, and Foo Fighters. Grohl is throwing this birthday party for Big Tony as a thank you for the influence Trouble Funk had on his own life. In a recent Youtube video tribute to Trouble Funk’s 35 anniversary, Grohl speaks on the inspiration the band has given him. Grohl said, “As a local kid growing up outside of Washington D.C. Trouble Funk were legends just as they are today. I opened up for Trouble Funk when I was maybe sixteen or seventeen years old and every time I have seen the band play it has inspired me to go home and discover music and play music and play as well as I can”.
