By all accounts, it was the perfect combination set for a band that returned to the Valley for the first time in three years. Warpaint took the stage at Coachella last weekend and played a 51-minute set that was an equal blend of both of the band’s successful albums.
Warpaint formed 10 years ago, but didn’t release its first album until 2011. Not long after the release of The Fool, the band played a set at Coachella 2011, already having attracted a loyal base of fans. After sophomore album Warpaint came out earlier this year, they had a few more established hits, like “Keep it Healthy” and “Love Is To Die”. This year, the set was nearly evenly distributed between songs off the first album, and songs off Warpaint, with the band essentially alternating back and forth.
With the setting sun framing Warpaint as they played their second Coachella set, the lighting used in the performance looked especially vivid. In a review of the band’s 2011 Coachella performance, it was mentioned that they were “a far more forceful presence in concert than on record”. Whether or not you agree with that, it’s hard to argue that they played quite the show.
