Sigur Ros has revealed their version of “The Rains of Casatmere”. The band’s version of The National’s song, appeared on last night’s episode of “Game of Thrones”.
According to the Rollingstone, “The Icelandic trio performed their interpretation of “The Rains of Castamere,” utilizing frontman Jonsi’s vocal coo, a brooding church organ and mournful choir”.
Also in this last episode, “The Lion and the Rose”, Sigur Ros made a cameo appearance. The show’s creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss are fans of Sigur Ros and asked them to appear on the show. In the past, Weiss and Benioff have casted members of Snow Patrol and Coldplay on the show as well.
Georg Holm of Sigur Ros said in a statement, “It was a great experience for us and fun to meet the cast of the show that we have all been following for a long time,” He went on to say, “The meanest person in television history, King Joffrey, is played by the sweetest guy Jack Gleeson. It was a brilliant ‘hurry up and wait’ time for us and we would do it again in a heartbeat. It felt like a natural thing to make our version of ‘Rains of Castamere”. For those of you who have yet to see the episode, I won’t go into much detail on the episode.
Sigur Ros has been active since 1994. Early 2013 the band held a Q&A session on Reddit where it was announced that Kjartan Sveinsson would be leaving the group. Their most recent album, Kveikur, debuted on March 22, 2013. The album was well received, scoring an 80 on metacritic. Sigur Ros did some work with The Simpsons. The band provided original music, a rendition of “The Simpsons Theme” for the episode “The Saga of Carl”, and played a brief cameo in the show.
