The Arctic Monkeys band formed in 2002 with current members Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley, and Matt Helders. Once the band took off, their music became popular across Northern England. In 2005, Arctic Monkeys signed to Domino. The band has released five albums; Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not, Favourite Worst Nightmare, Humbug, Suck It and See, and AM. Their latest album, AM was released last September and debuted at number 1 in the UK, selling over 157,000 copies its first week. The success of this album resulted in Arctic Monkeys becoming the first independent label band with five consecutive number 1 albums in the UK.
The band is known for its unique touch to indie rock. While their music falls under this umbrella genre, the band is known for slightly altering its sound on each album. As a result, it can be difficult to give the Arctic Monkeys’ music a specific label.
Earlier this month, Arctic Monkeys won multiple awards at the UK’s Grammy. The band took home the award from Best British Band and Album of the Year. Also, Arctic Monkeys won five awards at the NME Awards. There hit song, “Do I Wanna Know?” remains to be the number 1 most played alternative song in the US.
In addition to headlining at Los Angeles Staples Center, Arctic Monkeys will be performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August. For more information on the Arctic Monkeys, check out their official website.
