Health is an American noise rock band that originated in LA. The name of the band was chosen after the band’s members agreed that they wanted to use an “everyday word.” They created a list of words and went through it to see which words were taken, and the word “health” was the only one left.
In 2008, The Phoenix, a Boston newspaper, named them the Best New Band from California. Health went on to open for Nine Inch Nails on their ‘Lights in the Sky Tour” that fall. Rock Insider described Health as having “artfully crafted noise and raw synth, haunting monotone vocals, and drum skills that are borderline insane.” Health uses a zoothorn to create ‘weird sounds’ on their record. A zoothorn is a permutation of microphone and guitar pedal and an occasional atonal sound without a symmetrical structure.
In 2009, Health released their album, Get Color. The band was chosen as one of Beyond Race Magazine’s 50 Emerging Artists, and appeared in one of their issues that included an exclusive Q&A. Currently, Health is working on their third studio album. Band member Jake Duzsik describes their new music as “melancholic” and “fun” in a interview with Pitchfork Media.
