Too broke to buy tickets to Coachella this year? Lots of us are. That’s why the Los Angeles art scene now offers its own, much cheaper alternative to the April megafest. Brokechella is happening on Saturday, April 19 this year, and the festival just announced the lineup, including L.A. names like Kera and the Lesbians, yOya and LA Font.
Brokechella is sponsored by Cartel Collaborative Arts LA, a group that works to empower art in the Los Angeles area and encourage artists of all kinds, whether they’re beginners or professionals. Born out of the belief that art is vital to successful community, the collective sponsors workshops, performance opportunities and works to find venues for creative-minded folks. Brokechella started as the Spring Community Pool, an event where comedians, performing artists and bands came together to host a sort of talent show for L.A. artists. When the Spring Community Pool continued to outgrow its venues, Cartel Collaborative Arts LA decided to host it on the second weekend of Coachella and open it up to a wider range of people, holding it at the Airliner, complete with art, food trucks and typical festival fare. That was in 2011.
This year, tickets are $10 at presale and will cost $20 at the door. This year, festival organizers claim it includes comedy, DJs, art and food once again, and now it’s grown to four stages. Although not consciously trying to stop fans from heading to Coachella, Brokechella organizers offer a cheaper alternative that gives fans their art and music fix, while supporting local, homegrown acts.
