While it was recently disclosed Chad Channing, the drummer mostly responsible for Bleach, and a key song from Nevermind, would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of Nirvana, it has now been announced he will not be included in the induction.
Channing, the third drummer to join Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain in the early years of the band, played on all but three of the songs from Bleach, the grunge group’s debut, then left the band due to artistic differences. Dave Grohl was chosen to replace him, and obviously, the rest is history – the next album for the reconstructed Nirvana, Nevermind, remains a pivotal milestone in the history of music. An interesting thing of note, however, is that one of Nevermind’s fundamental songs, “Polly,” included Channing’s drumming.
Following the announcement of the 2014 RRHOF inductees last December, Channing, now playing with Before Cars, revealed to Future Rock Legends he would included in the Nirvana induction. Radio.com wrote today that Channing had contacted them after an interview they did this weekend, and explained how RRHOF had sent a text to Nirvana’s management that said, “Can you tell whoever looks after Chad Channing that he isn’t being inducted…It is just Dave, Krist and Kurt.”
Sad news for Channing, but it’s been great to have his name brought back up during such an honored time in his old band’s career. And so, as they get ushered into the Hall of Fame April 10th, consider paying this legendary group homage with a listen to their In Utero reissue, or by watching Nirvana’s performance of “Rape Me” at MTV’s 1993 Live and Loud concert. It will also definitely do your ears a favor if you put Bleach back on the record player that night.
