More huge, unexpected news from SXSW. Julian Casablancas and the Voidz just performed “Instant Crush”, Casablancas’ collaboration with Daft Punk, for the first time in concert.
We first caught wind of “Instant Crush” a couple of months ago. The song was born of a in-studio meeting between Casablancas and Daft Punk while the latter were working on the Tron soundtrack. The French duo pitched a demo, Casablancas liked the demo, and hey presto – “Instant Crush”.
While Casablancas has co-producer cred on the song, not to mention lead guitar and vocal parts, it sounds a good deal more Daft Punk than Strokes, but Casablancas managed to put his own spin on it over at SXSW’s Fader Fort. Gone is the vocoder and the synthesizers; it’s just Casablancas, two mics, and the Voidz. It’s the first time we’ve caught the song live, and we’re glad Casablancas’ trademark laconic vocals made the trip. Check the video out below.
