Soundgarden, a Seattle rock band formed in the 1980’s, is celebrating the anniversary of its famed album, Superunknown. The iTunes Festival, a highlight of the SXSW, welcomed the band to play their entire album just this past week.
This legendary band heavily influenced the alternative rock genre of music and practically created grunge in the 80’s.Their album, Superunknown, debuted as number one in 1984 on the Billboard charts. Two Grammy-award winning songs, “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”, premiered on the album. Superunknown has sold an estimated 10.5 copies in the United States alone, and 22.5 worldwide. The album also appeared on the Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Due to its success, Soundgarden celebrates the album’s anniversary. This year is Superunknown’s twentieth anniversary, and the band has fittingly decided to go on tour as a result. The band announced in February that they will be releasing a deluxe album of Superunknown to celebrate the platinum anniversary. For the first time in the band’s music history, these upcoming shows will contain the entire deluxe album.
